How to Avoid Demurrage and Detention Charges on Container Imports

A practical checklist for reducing container demurrage and detention risk through customs readiness, appointments, unloading plans and empty-return control.

PackToolbox Editorial Updated October 2, 2026

Demurrage and detention are avoidable more often than many importers assume. The biggest savings usually come from process discipline before the container arrives, not from disputing the invoice afterward.

1. Know the last free day

Record the carrier’s free-time allowance and last free date as soon as the shipment becomes available. Maersk allows authorized users to view free days and last free date in its import tools, and other carriers provide similar information.

2. Complete customs work early

Missing commercial documents, classification questions and unpaid duties can trap a container at the terminal. Build a pre-arrival checklist for broker documents, product descriptions, values and consignee information.

3. Pre-book trucking and receiving capacity

Do not wait for cargo availability to discover that no truck or dock appointment is available. Coordinate the drayage provider, delivery location and warehouse receiving window before ETA.

4. Plan unloading and empty return

Detention risk continues after pickup. Make sure labor, equipment and storage space are ready so the container can be unloaded and the empty returned promptly to the correct depot.

5. Keep evidence when delays are outside your control

Save appointment screenshots, customs-release timestamps, terminal notices and communications. Maersk’s U.S. guidance, for example, asks for evidence when disputes involve inability to secure terminal appointments.

Put the cost into unit economics

If a $1,000 container delay is spread across 2,000 units, it adds $0.50 per unit before any other landed-cost effects. Use the Freight Cost Per Unit Calculator and Freight Cost Allocation Calculator to model the impact.

See Maersk’s current D&D guidance and your carrier’s local tariff before relying on any free-time assumption.
