Freight Density Calculator

Calculate shipment density from total weight and dimensions. See pounds per cubic foot and kilograms per cubic meter instantly.

Shipment details

Use the outer dimensions and total shipment weight.

Formula
Density = Total Weight ÷ Total Cubic Volume

What freight density tells you

Freight density compares a shipment’s weight with the space it occupies. Higher density means more weight packed into each cubic unit. Always use the full handling-unit dimensions and total applicable weight.

Freight density example

A 48 × 40 × 45 inch handling unit occupies 50 ft³. At a total weight of 500 lb, its density is 10 lb/ft³, or about 160.18 kg/m³.

Frequently asked questions

Does density determine freight class by itself?

No. Density can be an important input, but freight classification and pricing can depend on additional rules and shipment characteristics.

What dimensions should I measure?

Use the full outside dimensions of the handling unit as shipped, including the pallet or packaging where applicable.
