How to compare two 3PL quotes
- Use the same monthly orders, units per order, storage footprint and inbound activity for every provider.
- Enter every recurring line item, including account minimums or technology fees.
- Use the same expected return rate and packaging assumptions.
- Add the outbound shipping rate only when comparing quotes on the same service mix and zone profile.
- Compare cost per order as well as the monthly total; then evaluate service levels and operational fit separately.
What the calculator does not model
It does not automatically price project labor, long-term storage, peak surcharges, B2B routing-compliance charges, EDI/API integration work, custom inserts, hazmat handling, temperature control, international duties or contract minimums unless you include those amounts in your quote inputs.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good 3PL cost per order?
There is no universal benchmark that is meaningful without the product, order profile, storage footprint, geography and service level. Compare providers against the same operating assumptions instead of using one headline rate.
Should shipping be included in 3PL cost per order?
For a fully loaded cost view, yes. For warehouse-only comparison, set outbound shipping to zero and compare fulfillment cost separately.
Why do 3PL quotes look difficult to compare?
Providers can structure storage, labor, minimums, packaging and account fees differently. Standardizing the operating profile and fee categories makes the economics clearer.
