Formula
Billable weight = higher of actual weight or dimensional weight

What is billable weight?

Billable or chargeable weight is the weight value a carrier uses for pricing after applying the relevant dimensional-weight rule. Carrier divisors and rounding rules vary, so verify the current service rule before shipping.

Worked example

A 20 × 14 × 10 inch package has 2,800 in³ of volume. With a divisor of 139, its raw dimensional weight is about 20.14 lb. If the selected rule rounds up, that becomes 21 lb. With an actual weight of 8 lb, the dimensional figure is higher.

Frequently asked questions

Is billable weight always the higher of actual and dimensional weight?

That is a common parcel-pricing approach, but the exact divisor, rounding method, minimums and exceptions depend on the carrier and service. Verify the rule used by the quote you are evaluating.

What divisor should I enter?

Use the dimensional-weight divisor stated by the carrier, service agreement or rate sheet. The calculator is intentionally configurable so it is not tied to one provider.
